چکیده

We present a photometric selection method for ULIRGs in the redshift range of z = 1 – 2. We utilize the most prominent spectral feature of ULIRGs, i.e. the silicate absorption feature at 9.7 μm and an optimized filter system at mid-infrared wavelengths. These ‘silicate-break’ galaxies could be selected by using colour anomalies owing to the silicate absorption feature around 9.7(1+z) μm. Such filter systems are available on the Spitzer Space Telescope but we suggest that the most promising selection criteria would be given with mid-infrared bands of ASTRO-F satellite due to a more comprehensive set of filter bands than that of Spitzer. We study the selection method of silicate-break galaxies with the SED model of both starbursts and quiescent star-forming galaxies, and then verify the method by using the observed spectra of nearby galaxies. We would expect that about 1000 candidates of silicate-break galaxies could be detected per square degree in current and future mid-infrared surveys. The silicate-break selection criteria will break the degeneracy between various galaxy evolution models for extragalactic source counts and place strong limits on the star formation activity at z = 1 – 2. Applying our silicate-break technique to initial Spitzer results we have tentatively identified the first candidate silicate-break galaxy at z = 1.6.

DISCOVERY OF RADIO JETS IN z ∼ 2 ULTRALUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES WITH DEEP 9.7 mm SILICATE ABSORPTION

Recent Spitzer observations have revealed a substantial population of z ∼ 2 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with deep silicate absorption ( ). This paper reports a 20 cm radio study of such a sample to t 1 1 9.7 elucidate their physical nature. We discover that a substantial fraction (40%) of deep silicate absorption ULIRGs at z ∼ 2 are moderately radio-loud, with W Hz . This is in str...

The Deep Silicate Absorption Feature in IRAS 08572+3915 and Other Infrared Galaxies

New mid-infrared (10 and 20 μm) spectro-photometry of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 is presented. The 10 μm spectrum reveals a deep silicate absorption feature, while the 20 μm spectrum shows no clear evidence for an 18 μm silicate absorption feature. An interstellar extinction curve is fitted to IRAS 08572+3915 and two other deep silicate infrared galaxies, NGC 4418 and Arp...

8 – 13 μ m spectroscopy of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies

New moderate-resolution mid-infrared spectroscopy at 10 μm of 27 infrared galaxies is presented. The galaxies have been chosen from three 60 μm selected and one 12 μm selected complete flux-limited catalogs of galaxies; 17 of these sources have LIR(8– 1000μm) ≥ 5 × 10 L⊙. A high-resolution spectrum of the source Arp 299B1 is also presented. Combining these new results with previously published ...

On the fate of gas in ultraluminous infrared galaxies at low and high redshift

It is often suggested that the distant galaxies recently identified in 850-μm surveys with the SCUBA bolometer array on the JCMT Telescope are high-redshift analogues to local ultraluminous infrared galaxies, based on their similar spectral energy distributions and luminosities. We show that these two populations of objects must differ in at least one fundamental way from each other. This asser...

Ultraluminous galaxies in the local universe (z≤0.2) emit the bulk of their energy in the mid and far-infrared. The multiwavelength approach to these objects has shown that they are advanced mergers of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Galaxy-galaxy collisions took place on all cosmological time-scales, and nearby mergers serve as local analogs to gain insight into the physical processes that lead to t...
